Winter weather will be here soon and the Town of Georgina is ready to handle the snow and ice on the roads and sidewalks. Did you know the Town is responsible for 333 kilometres of roads, 140 kilometres of sidewalks and multi-use paths, and 25 municipal parking lots? A combination of Town-owned trucks and contracted services provide snowplowing services to Town roads and sidewalks through a priority and secondary route system. 

The Town’s trophy shelf is expanding again after capturing three MarCom awards. The Communications Division won a gold MarCom award for the Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) sneak peek video. The Economic Development and Tourism Division received two gold MarCom awards for the Taste of Georgina campaign and the National Post advertorial on the Keswick Business Park.

Whether you are looking to get into the holiday spirit or find something new, there is lots to do in Georgina this December. 

Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that locally heavy rainfall amounts of 30mm to 50mm is possible through this Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.  

While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists.  Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses.

Due to the Canada Post strike, water bills will be available for pickup at the Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) for residents who live in the south part of Keswick that typically receive a November water bill and commercial businesses that receive monthly water bills.

Starting on Wednesday, Nov. 20, Town staff will be at the MURC with copies of water bills for pickup from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays until the end of November, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 30.  

The Town of Georgina, in collaboration with local filmmaker Quinn Corkal, is proud to announce the release of a new short documentary, Beyond the Fields. This short film is an extension of the Town’s Grown in Georgina campaign, celebrating the dedication and contributions of Georgina’s agricultural community. The documentary will officially be available for public viewing on Nov. 28, 2024.

Drivers will get a chance to turn something naughty into something nice this holiday season with the return of Georgina’s Toys for Tickets program. It allows people who get a parking ticket between Nov. 18 and Dec. 4, 2024, between the hours of 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. for parking on Town roads, the option of paying the ticket with a new, unwrapped toy equal to or greater than the amount of the fine. All toys received will be distributed through a local charity.

The Keswick Santa Claus Parade takes place on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) will be open.

Road closures: Starting at 1 p.m., the following roads will be closed:

• Ravenshoe Road and Woodbine Avenue intersection, extending north up to Woodbine Avenue and Church Street

Accessing the MURC during the parade:

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is currently in negotiations with Canada Post which could result in a postal strike starting on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024. Should a strike occur, residents are reminded payment is still required to ensure bills/accounts are current.

Today, Council received the 2025 proposed budget, which includes a 2.99 per cent increase for operating expenditures and two per cent increase for an infrastructure levy for a total tax levy increase of 4.99 per cent. The annual infrastructure levy for capital reserves is necessary to ensure the Town can continue to invest in the capital infrastructure that residents rely upon. Georgina’s water and wastewater budget includes its own costs, as well as the water and wastewater costs billed by York Region.
