A heavy rainfall warning is in effect for Georgina and all of York Region. Periods of heavy rainfall associated with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl have moved into the area. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority says widespread flooding is not expected, however, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists.
Here are some reminders on staying flood safe:
The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) are forecasting that the remnants of Hurricane Beryl will bring heavy rainfall throughout the Lake Simcoe watershed early Wednesday and continue into Thursday. The total rainfall amounts are forecast to be in excess of 50 mm. Although soil conditions are dry within the watershed, intense downpours may produce significant localized runoff.
Before you head to the beach, be advised that York Region has posted advisories at De La Salle Beach Park and Claredon Beach Park due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria.
Due to inclement weather, construction has been delayed to July 16, 2024. Beginning that date, the east parking lot, as well as the east library entrance at the Peter Gzowski (Sutton) branch of Georgina Public Library will be closed for construction. Staff and patrons will be asked to park in the west parking lot and enter the building through the west school entrance currently being used by aquatics, and walk through the school to arrive at the library entrance.
The Sutton branch of Georgina Public Library will be closed on Tuesday, July 9 from noon to 3 p.m. for a planned power outage for an electrical inspection organized by the York Catholic District School Board.
It will impact the entire facility, including the library and Leisure Pool, which will be closed to the public.
Environment Canada has put York Region under a two-day heat warning.
The National Weather Agency says a heat event will begin Monday and persist into Tuesday.
