Special Access for Special Needs

Welcome to the Official Town of Georgina Website! This site is currently in the process of being re-designed to better serve all users. The redesign also includes improvements for visitors with special needs.

These improvements reflect the Town of Georgina's commitment to accessibility and to the new Ontarians with Disabilities legislation.

Here are some current features already available on the site
  • A site map and general search page allows easy access to content and linking information. All navigation bars are also structured logically based on content.
  • Cross-reference and reciprocal links have been provided on most pages for easy access to other related information on the site.
  • Text colours contrast with the background colour for easier reading of all pages. Combinations of red/green and blue/yellow text have been reduced to address common colour blindness.
  • Text font styles and sizes have been standardised for all pages. Users can easily adjust font size and enhance the view of our site by changing Internet browser settings, or by enabling (or modifying) specific operating system accessibility options. Additional enhancements can be made by adjusting resolution settings within the operating system, or by adjusting monitor settings.
  • Translator links are provided on the homepage to allow users the ability to complete a literal word-by-word translation of information into different languages. Please note, that Canadian English spellings are used on this site; therefore, translations may not be entirely accurate.
  • Electronic messages sent to any general delivery e-mailbox (i.e. info@georgina.ca ) will prompt an immediate automated reply from Information Technology indicating receipt of the message, and noting the actions that will be taken to ensure a timely response. Hearing impaired visitors will be aware of the status of messages sent.
Features being phased in from this point forward include
  • Descriptor tags will be placed on every page and on all graphics. Tags provide information about the content and graphics of each page. Visually impaired visitors using web reading programs are better able to scan content.
  • Links will be modified to allow a pointing device to show highlights of contrasting colour (or unique shapes) to indicate selections. Highlights will better assist visually impaired visitors navigating the site. Combinations of red/green and blue/yellow text have been reduced to address common colour blindness.
  • Executive summaries for large file attachments will be provided to improve content referencing and access to web reading programs.
  • The Town of Georgina will continue to improve accessibility features on the web-site. Web-auditing will be conducted on a regular basis to monitor the website and ensure that it remains compliant within the Town of Georgina's vision of accessibility.
