Requirements to Obtain a Marriage Licence

- A Marriage Licence can be issued to the bride and/or groom only.
Both parties must complete and sign the marriage licence application.
Please complete all applicable sections of the application form.
(If you live at an R.R.# Or If you have a box number as an address, We require the actual street address.) - The bride or groom (or both) apply in person to obtain a licence. Where only one party is present for the licence, you must produce identification for yourself as well as for the person not in attendance at the time the licence is issued, such as BIRTH CERTIFICATE, CURRENT PASSPORT, RECORD OF IMMIGRANT LANDING, CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP CARD or DRIVERS LICENCE.
- Term of Licence. The licence is valid anywhere in the province of Ontario. The licence expires 3 months after the date of issue.
- Applicants under the age of 18, but over 16, will require parental consent. Please see Issuer for further details.
- If a previous marriage was dissolved or annulled within Canada, the original or court certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce must be submitted. A Divorce Judgment or Divorce Order is not considered a final document. Certified copies may be obtained from the Court that granted the divorce. All documents will be returned, photocopies are not acceptable.
- If you were divorced outside of Canada, you must complete a Foreign Divorce Kit to obtain authorization as required by the Office of the Registrar General. This process may take up to four weeks.
- MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE The required form to purchase a Marriage Certificate is handed out with each licence issued. If a certificate is required, the form must be completed and forwarded with the required fee to the Office of the Registrar General, 12 weeks after the date of marriage.
