A few of the many motifs seen on early gravestones, with the commonly-held interpretations of their symbolic significance:

  • Arch - Victory of life, or victory in death.
  • Bird - Eternal life.
  • Columns, doors - Heavenly entrances.
  • Figs, Fruit - Prosperity, eternal life.
  • Flowers - Frailty of life.
  • Garland - Victory.
  • Hand Pointing - Heavenly reward.
  • Rooster - Awakening; the Resurrection.
  • Scythe - Death, the divine harvest.
  • Vines - The sacraments.
  • Weeping willow - Nature's lament.
  • Winged skull - Flight of the soul from mortal man.
