Baldwin Abandoned Cemetery - Christian Church Cemetery

The tombstone of David Liscomb and the church step are the only evidence left of the Christian Church and the Cemetery of Baldwin, Ontario. The single tombstone is broken in two and lying flat - face-up under a lilac tree on privately owned land.

The church was built in 1882 on land donated by George W. Tomlinson - part Lot 2, Conc. 3 (formerly Township of Georgina).

The following is information from the Georgina Archives, Keswick, contained in Binders marked "Churches of Georgina" and obtained from Mr. Frank Tomlinson:

  • "The Exterior of the church was simple wood panels. The interior walls were plastered and painted. "
  • "There was a small burial ground by the church and there are a few headstones still standing."
  • "The church was closed during the 1940's due to an ever decreasing congregation. The church was torn down and Dan Prosser of Sutton (a descendent of the original minister) used the lumber to construct his own house in Sutton."

No church or cemetery records have ever been found but the following references can be found in "Our Christian Heritage" a book recently compiled by Udelle V. Wood, a Stouffville Christian Church Historian.
