Welcome to the Town of Georgina Fire Department

Fire Prevention Week

2009 Fire Prevention Banner
This year's theme is "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned". Testing the water before putting a child in the bath may sound like common sense. Wearing short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking on the stovetop may show foresight. This and other simple actions may be all it takes to prevent devastating burns. Fire Prevention Week 2009 focuses on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.

We'll be spreading the word that with a little extra caution, preventing the leading causes of home fires and fire deaths - cooking, heating, and smoking materials - is within our power. As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Georgina Fire Department meets with students in elementary schools throughout the area and also hosts Open Houses at all three fire stations in order to provide instruction on issues such as fire prevention, fire drills and general fire safety. For more information visit http://www.nfpa.org

This year our Open House will be on Saturday October 3rd, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at all three Fire Stations. Please join us for a fun filled day with face painting, contests, finger printing kits, a B.B.Q and Sparky!!

Working Smoke Alarms: It?s the Law!

Some of the most law-abiding people are unknowingly breaking the law every day. Not for robbery, or speeding, or assault. But simply because they don?t have working smoke alarms in their homes. A recent amendment to the Ontario Fire Code now requires homes to have working smoke alarms on every level. This is in addition to the existing requirement of having smoke alarms outside all sleeping areas. The amendment applies to all single-family, semi-detached and town homes, whether owner-occupied or rented.

For homeowners, that may mean purchasing additional smoke alarms and installing them on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Failure to do so could result in a ticket for $235.

The Fire Code amendment came into effect on March 1, 2006. After that date, fire departments will be enforcing the regulation in communities throughout Ontario.

For more details regarding the new amendment please do not hesitate to contact our Fire Prevention Division at 905-476-5167.
